Overview
High-temperature sealing applications place demanding requirements on spring energizers. As operating temperature increases, spring material behavior, spring force stability, fatigue performance and long-term consistency can all become important to the sealing system.
Handa Spring manufactures spring energizers for high-temperature sealing applications where the spring must maintain the required loading and dimensional performance under elevated operating temperatures. We work with different spring configurations, materials, dimensions and force requirements to provide spring energizers matched to the actual operating conditions of the application.
Engineering Insight
A spring energizer does more than provide an initial load. Within a sealing system, the spring must maintain appropriate contact force as operating conditions change. At elevated temperatures, material behavior and manufacturing processes can influence how the spring performs over time.
For high-temperature applications, important considerations may include:
The appropriate spring specification should therefore be considered as a complete system rather than selected by temperature rating alone.
Materials
Material selection is an important consideration when designing a spring energizer for elevated-temperature service.
However, the appropriate alloy depends on more than operating temperature alone. Temperature range, exposure time, media, pressure, dynamic conditions, cycle requirements and required spring performance should all be considered when evaluating the spring material.
Depending on the application, Handa Spring can work with stainless steels and nickel-based alloys for spring energizer production, including:
Note: The appropriate material should be evaluated according to the complete operating environment rather than temperature alone. For detailed material properties, temperature guidance and alloy comparisons, see our Spring Energizer Materials Guide.
Engineering
Spring force is one of the most important characteristics of a spring energizer.
Within a sealing system, the spring provides the loading required to maintain contact between the sealing element and the mating surface. If the spring force does not remain appropriate during operation, sealing performance can be affected.
High-temperature applications therefore require consideration of:
Handa Spring can manufacture spring energizers according to application-specific force requirements rather than relying only on standard spring specifications. Where required, spring force can be evaluated and controlled according to the agreed technical requirements.
Spring Configurations
High-temperature performance is not determined by material alone. Spring configuration, geometry, dimensions and spring loading can all influence how the energizer performs within the sealing system.
Handa Spring manufactures several spring energizer configurations that can be considered for high-temperature applications.
Helical spring energizers are commonly used for static and slow dynamic sealing applications where stable spring loading is required.
Canted coil spring energizers provide a flexible configuration for applications requiring controlled contact force and application-specific dimensions.
Cantilever V springs can be considered for dynamic applications where controlled spring loading and lower friction are important.
Cantilever U springs provide another option for dynamic sealing applications where spring geometry, force and installation conditions need to be balanced.
Full contact spring configurations can be considered for demanding sealing environments where continuous spring contact is required.
Detached leg springs can be considered when installation space or groove geometry places specific constraints on the spring configuration.
Combined Conditions
High temperature is rarely the only requirement in an actual sealing application. A spring energizer may need to operate at elevated temperature while also being exposed to other demanding conditions.
Pressure conditions can influence the required spring loading and the overall sealing system design.

Vacuum applications may require additional consideration of material selection, cleanliness, surface condition and controlled spring loading.

Note: High-temperature performance should therefore be evaluated together with the other operating conditions rather than treated as an isolated specification.
Manufacturing
The material selected for a high-temperature spring is only part of the final result. Manufacturing processes can also influence spring performance, dimensional consistency and force characteristics.
Handa Spring’s spring energizer manufacturing capabilities include:
Manufacturing approach: Different spring configurations require different manufacturing approaches. Wire-formed configurations such as Canted Coil and Garter Springs provide broad flexibility across different dimensions and configurations without dedicated stamping dies. Strip-formed configurations are manufactured according to the required spring geometry, material, dimensions and production requirements. For configurations requiring tooling, standard sizes are available and custom tooling can be developed when required.
Custom Manufacturing
High-temperature sealing applications often require more than a standard spring specification. Handa Spring supports custom spring energizer manufacturing for application-specific requirements.
Customers can provide an existing drawing, spring specification, sample or application requirements. Our engineering and manufacturing teams can review the requirements and determine the appropriate spring configuration, material and manufacturing approach.
Project Information
A temperature value alone is usually not enough to establish a spring specification. For a high-temperature spring energizer project, useful application information may include:
The normal operating temperature, maximum temperature and expected exposure conditions.
The pressure or vacuum conditions under which the sealing system operates.
The gas, liquid or chemical environment to which the spring may be exposed.
Whether the seal remains static or experiences reciprocating, rotating or other movement.
The expected operating frequency and number of cycles where repeated movement is involved.
The required spring force or the existing spring specification.
Groove dimensions, available space and other installation constraints.
The preferred spring alloy, if already specified, or the operating conditions required for material evaluation.
Prototype, small-batch or production requirements can influence the appropriate manufacturing approach.
Engineering Support
High-temperature spring energizer projects often require the spring to be considered together with the complete sealing system. Handa Spring can work from customer drawings, existing specifications or actual application requirements.
Depending on the project, technical discussions may include:
Objective: The objective is not simply to identify a spring that can withstand a specified temperature. The objective is to establish a spring energizer that can be manufactured consistently and provide the required spring loading under the actual operating conditions.
